Ways to overcome your fear and be the best leader in your field.

In order to master any skill, you require some element of fear-conquering and leadership is no different. Robin Sharma rightly said, “The most beautiful thing about fear is, when you run to it, it runs away”. So, fears are not a dead end but a challenge which you can accomplish easily using your prudence and courage.

Entrepreneurship desperately demands effective leadership. So, you have to be able enough to make correct decisions, organize suitable plans, hire efficient teammates and provide correct direction. And above all this is to be done under the steady pressure of being accountable for each decision and action. Often an entrepreneur’s personal success is related directly to the success of his/her business. Thus, every little decision they make could have significant consequences. There is definitely a lot of pressure, which may lead you to have worries and fears. It is your decision, as you know fears can intimidate you and indeterminate your judgment. Thereby rendering your decisions as less logical and less systematic approach.

Courage is not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

So, here we will guide you through ways that will help you conquer fear and be a leader.

Be prepared

This is the first step. We can’t sit back and acknowledge how well trained we are until the training is tested in battle.

A number of fears can come into play when you are leading a team. Entrepreneurs face as their companies grow. The changes flow in. At a time you are an eager person with a great idea and suddenly you are transforming into a leader or manager. You become that someone who is looked upon for inspiration. At times, this happens more quickly than you anticipated, so you must handle these inevitable challenges.

Five main fears usually faced by a leader and tips to overcome them-

1. Decision making-

Decision-making is critical for any leadership. Now, a number of things that follow up your decision may affect you considerably. If your decision is good, no worries. However, even if you made a poor decision you will have something to learn from.

So, take it positively rather than sitting back and complaining about it. At times, it’s just about making a decision and moving forward. But be prepared, use the facts at hand, and make the best possible decisions you can. This is the way to overcome your fear rather than avoiding the whole situation.

2. Criticism

A leader is looked upon. People expect a leader to be simply perfect, absolutely flawless. Your shortcomings are highlighted more than your strengths. Criticism is something you should expect.

So, the best advice would be to get used to it.

To take it a step further, get out in front of it. Being self-aware is a highly useful quality when carrying the load of leadership. Face the fear head on by regularly requesting anonymous feedback from your team. This can be done by using 360 degree reviews or surveys with specific questions about how effective you are in your role. Another way to do this is simply by asking, “How am I doing? What else could I do to be a more impactful leader for this team?” Humility will go a long way.

3. Failure

Leader’s fear of failure is financially, personally and logically motivated. As a leader, you may fear that if business goes under, you will be out of job, team and also some money. Leaders hate failures more than anything. But nobody becomes a successful leader without having faced failure along the way. This is the way most of us gain wisdom. While leading a team, failure comes in many forms.

From making bad financial decisions, hiring the wrong people, to overpromising and under delivering, inconsistency, etc. It happens when you are not properly communicating the visions and everyone’s role in the mission success. Do not forget that failure is inevitable.

But remember that failure is not the end of the line. Failure should not have recognized as a bad word as it is often seen to be. For most of the entrepreneurs, failure is an important stepping stone of a longer and successful journey. So, even if business goes under, you will always have another chance for some different kind of success.

Try to overcome all those fears. It is not easy, but it is certainly possible. It is equally necessary if you want to see yourself or remain as a great leader.

4. Speaking

Speaking publicly is one among the biggest reported fears in the world. It tops the charts in the surveys worldwide. It’s because you are on the spot, this makes you vulnerable to people at once. You think that any stumble could make you appear foolish. Any slip in words can compromise your image as the authority. But again, a leader within an organization, public speaking is one of the things you will have to do mostly while addressing team. Just think that if you cannot do this with utmost confidence then how are you expecting your team to follow you.

So, it is sincerely recommended to take every single opportunity to speak in front of audiences. This can be in client presentations, addressing at industry conferences, during meetings, or in guest lecturing at any local universities. Relax before you go on the platform or stage. Prepare as much as possible and keep reminding yourself that you are human, and also that people in your audience will see you as a human as well. So, even if you make any mistakes, it will not play any havoc. Practice makes a man perfect. Do it more to build your confidence.

5. Responsibility

Much power brings much responsibility. You are not only responsible to clients and shareholders but also to your utmost priority – your Team. Remember to put them first, as all the rest will automatically fall into place. As a leader, your responsibilities are to define the mission, remove obstacles and provide resources. You have to have the right people doing the right things. Keep all of them in the loop and ask them to do the same in return. Work together as a team as it lightens the burden of responsibility.

Best tip for you is – Whatever your fear is, face it head on, only to realize that you had nothing scare about.
