What you wear may affect your chances of getting hired, as well as your potential for advancement within a company. What you wear to office creates an image/ perception of the type of person you are. So, choosing your attire is critical to present yourself as the right candidate.

Knowing what to wear to a job is an age-old conundrum. Fashions may come and go, but style remains. There are a few hard and fast rules. There’s no room for experimentation. So, here is a guide to make sure you choose the winning outfit. We will also help you in deciding what you should wear every day.

When you go for an interview

This era promotes more casual approach to workplace attire. Even in interviews, in the past 10-15 years people follow a bit casual appearance. Job seekers dress up in a way to differentiate themselves from other candidates. Your clothes have a great role in influencing your chances of getting hired. When not sure be more formal rather than casual.

Your attire will depend on following factors-

  1. Geographical location of your office
  2. Type of industry
  3. Time of the year

Here we have some suggestions from experts-

For men-

  • Cotton wins over linen.
  • Ensure that your dress is properly cleaned and pressed.
  • White or pastel shirt or some dark sober colours in winters.
  • Conservative tie, dark socks, and dress shoes.
  • Always go for leather not suede.
  • Avoid garish patterns on ties.
  • It’s better to go with a plain, white shirt and a non-patterned, single-coloured tie.
  • The same goes for your socks. Don’t be mistaken that the interviewer will not notice.

For women-

  • You can either choose trousers or skirt.
  • The skirt’s hemline should be no more than one biro length above the knee.
  • Talking about colours you can’t go wrong with black. Navy blue, brown, in the summer, a lighter plain colour is also perfectly fine.
  • Avoid patterns.
  • Do not get too adventurous with the shoes. You must keep heels at a sensible height.

When you are hired

Various companies like to test your ability to interpret fashion by setting a business casual dress code. For both men and women, trousers and blazers can be mixed and matched. Ties can be dispensed. Shoes can be less formal. It seems confusing, follow these rules: No jeans. No trainers, T-shirts.

It is always better to think about what you’re going to wear to work beforehand. This way you won’t have to scramble at the last minute to get your work clothes ready. A number of offices have specific and conservative dress codes. So, once you are hired, it is a good to familiarize yourself with them. It is also wise and helpful to notice what your colleagues wear on a daily basis.

Follow the Dress Code if any

It is advisable to stick to the dress code as specified at least in the initial months. Do not change this habit even if you notice that some of your colleagues take liberties. Make sure your choices in dress do not make you stand out in a negative way. This will create a negative scene when you are trying to establish yourself within the office environment.

For men-

Most of the offices expect business attire. This doesn’t necessarily mean a black, navy blue, or grey suit every day. You may have the choice of a suit in any conservative colour. Always focus on your shirt and tie. This can be slightly more fashion forward. Always go for dark coloured socks, and make sure your shoes are polished well.

Men should remain simple and need not be much showy. Please avoid boyish, fancy/ funky hair styles.

For Women –

Women can wear a skirt, pant, or dress suit, or coordinating dress slacks, blazers etc.  A blouse, sweater will be appropriate. Hosiery and polished closed toe shoes are always good. Try to cover up tattoos and minimize piercings. You must keep your accessories simple. Like jewellery, make-up, hairstyles, handbags and scarves, should be conservative. Remember your office is not a fashion ramp. Undoubtedly, one can reflect individual style but avoid extremes such as bright red lip colour with formal black dress is a big no when you are going to office.

In the end, I would just like to say that your dressing reflects your personality. Majority of people judge others by their looks and your dress plays a major role. Good dressing sense not only impresses the viewer but also reflects your personality and attitude of living. A slight carelessness may turn out to be a blunder in the path of your success. Even today you can still tell a gentleman from his shoes. It is time we come out of the illusion that just because your shoes are present down far below they will not be noticed or your socks won’t catch attention.

Remember, the best way is to dress up for your own self. Dress perfectly to boost up your own confidence. When you are confident from within it is reflected in every step that you take.
